[A photograph in black and white of a beach seascape. The majority of the top of the image is the sky, fading from black at the top to a lighter shade towards the middle of the composition. The left edge displays the sand on the beach and the right shows the ocean waves crashing onto the beach.]
American, born Putnam, Connecticut, 1952
Tom Baril began working as Robert Mapplethorpe’s printer in 1979 while attending New York's School of Visual Arts, and continued to work closely with him for fifteen years. In stark contrast to Mapplethorpe’s boldly transgressive images, Baril’s images of urban architecture, minimalist seascapes, and detailed still lifes are quietly contemplative and imbued with a timeless and gentle luminosity.
Baril has had numerous solo exhibitions. His work is held by public and private collections worldwide, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Brooklyn Museum, New York; and the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
