Formanek received an MFA in painting from the State University of New York at Albany in 1983 where his thesis was Tissue-paper Hot Air Balloons in the form of Greek Temples. In 1978, he received his MA from the State University of New York at Albany where his thesis was Cast Acrylic Plastic Greek Temple Sculptures and Geological Paintings. In 1973 he received a BA from the State University of New York at Albany. “For a while I was painting in secret, but most of my work for the eye has gone into trying to landscape a small, steep, rocky plot (each of those adjectives could be a superlative). Slowly, carefully, I’m learning to build New England dry stone walls. I go to a geology study group, and recently led a field trip to the hill I live on.”
