Bonnie Acker and Women's Encampment Friends

American, 1948 -

Women’s Encampment for a Future of Peace & Justice was created in 1984 by artist and activist Bonnie Acker in collaboration with Women’s Encampment Friends.

Born in 1948 near Philadelphia, Acker has spent more than five decades merging art and activism. Inspired by early exposure to civil rights and peace movements, she committed to becoming a socially conscious artist as a teenager. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College, Acker traveled and worked across the United States, using art as a tool for grassroots organizing and social change.

Her bold illustrations have supported causes including peace, Indigenous rights, affordable housing, sustainable farming, and women’s advocacy. Since 1986, Acker has been based in Burlington, Vermont, where she continues her creative and community-focused work.
