Motherwell was born in 1915 in Aberdeen, Washington. At age 11, he was awarded a fellowship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. He received a B.A. from Stanford University in 1937. During the 1940s, the American Abstract Expressionist movement developed in New York, and Motherwell became a significant influence in the art world. The abstraction did not depend on an object or anything in nature. Motherwell’s paintings are bold, simple, and often symbolic. His paintings are influenced by literature, history, and his personal life. Motherwell died in 1991.
