Anthony Toney

Born in 1913 to Syrian immigrants in Gloversville, N.Y., Mr. Toney earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Syracuse University in 1934. Over the next decade he studied in Paris, painted murals under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War and also served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II.

He had his first solo show in New York at the Wakefield Gallery in 1941.

Mr. Toney began teaching at the New School in 1952 and earned a doctorate in fine arts and education from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1955.

He exhibited regularly at the ACA Gallery in New York and published a book, "Creative Painting and Drawing" (Dover), in 1968. His works are in numerous public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Va., and the New Britain Museum in Connecticut.
