Artist Statement “My work is about the phenomenon of time and how it relates to gravity. In most of these paintings there appears to be little or no gravity at all. Each composition begins with an openness, and layers of gestures that suggest fragments of reality, which float and create a range of tension within the ungrounded space. This open forum becomes a game explored through a variety of shapes, marks and colors that express visual, sociological or text-based events. Each painting is worked into during many studio sessions, sub-consciously and consciously, which encourages risk-taking then deals with formal issues. As the composition develops, decisions are made regarding gravitational pull, layering of paint, opacity, translucency, and visual speed, ultimately establishing tension and emotional temperature. The resulting chaos becomes a visual fantasy much like a broken puzzle.”
